Boston Spa lies 4.5 Miles to the North West of Tadcaster. 

The Memorial is made of ancaster stone and stands 22 feet high it was dedicated by Colonal Lane Fox Local MP on the 26th June 1921 and remembers the 32 men who gave their lives from the village.

DYKES Walter 

Private 5507 6th Bn Inniskilling Dragoons Attached 1st Regiment of Life Guards when KIA 30/10/1914 Aged 28. Brother of Henry above. Walter enlisted into the West Yorkshire Regiment aged 19 Occupation porter  05/12/1905 at Wetherby. Described as being 5ft 8 inches tall black hair with brown eyes. 26/01/1906 transferred to the 6th Bn Dragoons going to Cairo in Egypt, signing up for 7 years service and 4 years as a reservist. Stationed Lucknow India 03/04/1911. Walter left the army in 1912 and was mobilised as a reservist 05/08/1914. Medical records show he has a mild case of Malaria and suffered badly over his army career with tonsillitis. Walter was part of the Original British Expeditionary Force and fought at Mons. He was transferred to the 1st Regiment of Life Guards part of the Household Cavelery Blues and Twos. 

 

During the retreat from Mons Walter saw action at Le Cateau 26/08/1914, The Marne 06-12/09/1914, Battle of the Aisne in late September, Messines known as the raxce to the sea to stop the Germans taking the ports of BelgiUM, and finally the 1st Battle of Ypres at  Langemarck 21- 24/101914 and finally the Battle of Gheluvelt which started 29/10/1914-31/10/1914 Walter lost his life on the day the British lines were broken and lies where he fell to this day, the next day the british recaptured the lines and trench warfare attrition set in.

Private Atheling Farrer 22 the son of Edward Farrer of the High Street Boston Spa has succombed to wounds he recieved in June of this year. Private Farrer joined the KRR eleven months ago, and before the war was employed at the Victoria Club New Briggate Leeds.

Husband of Mary Agnes Brown Born Hunslet 1887 Married St Josephs Hunslet 11/01/1908. CWGC Church Street Boston Spa. Educated in Dublin employed at the Tower Brewery Company Tadcaster. Enlisted 15/06/1915 4th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Landed France 13/12/1917 with the 10th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment. Gazetted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenent the 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment 30/01/1918. Posted France 22/04/1918. Involved in fighting near the village of Ivry 18/10/1918 transferred to the No 8 Clearing Station Hospital at Boulogne.

 

A sad fact of the war was the amount of sons and daughters who were born and their fathers never saw their new born. One such instance is Cecile who had a daughter 28/10/1918 which was celebrated in the births section of the YEP Leeds 31/10/1918.

His commanding officer wrote: 

Cecil was cool in danger and quite fearless at all times and his loss is keenly felt by all his brother officers and men alike

NICKALLS Norman Tom

Brigadier General Commanding 63rd Infantry Brigade 21st Division Formerly 17th Lancers KIA 26/09/1915 Aged 51. Born Bromley Kent 1864. Son of Tom and Emily Quihampton Married Maldon 1860. CWGC Patterson Court Red Hill Surrey. Husband of Evirild Wentworth Withington Married St Peters Wooley Yorkshire 1895. CWGC 61 Elm Park Gardens West Brompton London. Educated at Eton, Norman was Commissioned into the 17th Lancers in November 1886, he served in South Africa in the Boar War between 1900 and 1902. Residence 1911 Edward Barracks Sialkot Cavalry Brigade India, where he retired. Moved to boston Hall Boston Spa commanded the Yorkshire Territorial Brigade  and at the outbreak of war was Commisioned as Brigadier General in August 1914. June 1915 saw Norman in court being charged with assault after challanging a man by the name of Horseman during a recruitmant drive at Scarborough, Norman had questioned why he had not enlited and struck Horseman with his wip. He was fined 2 Guinees and on leaving the court shook hands with Horseman. Norman was a popular member of the Bramham Moor hunt.

His death was reported nation wide including a story of his chauffeur who was taken prisoner, and was according to the YEP compelled by the Germans to guide them to the British lines. This he did up to a certain point, when he communicated with his comrades, and for his bravery he was done to death by the Huns, his body was when found having no fewer than 17 bayonet wounds.  Major Bulloch of the West Yorkshire Regiment reported that he saw a shell hit near the chalk pit where Norman was stood his body was never found. Norman is remembered on a Brass plaque in Eton Collage Chapel.

Husband of Ada Mary Hervey the daughter of Colonel De La Motte Hervey of the 13th Bengal Lancers Married Agra India 1907. Thomas attended collage in Epsom Surey and was a medical student in Leeds in the 1901 census. Serving in the Army in the 1911 census having spent 5 years in India at Lucknow, Agra, Kailana and Ranikhet. 

Thomas Enlisted 05/07/1905 Royal Army Medical Corps and was promoted to Captain 31/01/1909. Was at Connaught Hospital Aldershot when war broke out. Landed France 16/08/1914 with the 26th Brigade Royal Field Artillery.
